Insurance Plan
My mom recently got in a car accident. She is fine, thankfully, but the frame of the car was bent which rendered it undriveable until it was taken to the shop for repairs. This is why we have insurance on our vehicles. Accidents happen, we can’t be perfect, so we have protection for ourselves and our cars through insurance plans. Why, if we have insurance, do we not purposely drive recklessly and run our cars into things? That’s a silly question. Obviously we don’t purposely crash our cars just because we know we have insurance. That would be dangerous.
Why is it, then, that sometimes Christians chose live their lives this way? Just because we have been saved, doesn’t mean we can run around sinning with the assurance that we are forgiven. Yes you might know that your sins will be forgiven, but that doesn’t give you free rein to continue living in sin. Similar to purposefully running your car into things just because you have an insurance policy, continuing to live in sin just because you have accepted Christ’s sacrifice for your life is dangerous to your soul, and it damages the relationship you have with Jesus.
Of course we are human, we make mistakes. We can fall into sin much like we can get into fender benders. The good news is that Jesus knows that we are imperfect beings… that’s what He died for. His unconditional love and grace is given to us for when we mess up. It covers the mistakes we have made and will make in the future. But just as we need to try our best to be safe on the road, and know we have insurance for when we mess up, we need to try our best to live like Christ on Earth, and rely on His forgiveness when we fall short.
1 John 3:6-9 says:
“No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” (ESV)
Practice righteousness as Jesus did during his time on Earth and rest assured that if you know the Lord, you have an insurance plan to cover your sin where you fall short.
